Metal in the oil complicates Dave's Auto Center's GMC diagnosis

A high-mileage Sierra and a Porsche spared a full rebuild give the shop's six-upload week two very different repair decisions.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

  1. 6:30Kyle cuts open the GMC's oil filter to inspect its pleats.
  2. 8:05Metal flakes in the drained oil prompt Dave to advise Doug against a partial engine repair.
  3. 15:18Doug chooses to address the belt noise and continue driving rather than replace the engine immediately.
  4. 20:44A separate dismantled L87 shows bearing wear; further inspection reveals a broken camshaft lobe.
  5. 22:25Dave proposes raising low-load oil pressure through pump reprogramming and testing the idea on a dyno.

Kyle cuts open the GMC's oil filter, and the inspection becomes a different conversation. Under a flashlight, Dave and Kyle find metal flakes in the drained oil. The truck may sound less alarming than expected, but that glitter is not reassuring.

"The Dealer Said This GMC Needs a New Engine. We Took a Closer Look." drew roughly 560,000 views, the largest audience among Dave's Auto Center's six new uploads. Its subject is a Sierra with 340,000 miles, still working for hot-shot driver Doug. Dave advises against a partial engine repair at that mileage; Doug chooses to address the belt noise and keep driving for now.

Dave doesn't pretend to know how long that choice will hold. "My crystal ball broke a long time ago, and I haven't been able to glue it back together, so I can't predict your future," he tells Doug. Viewers are discussing the truck's mileage, the economics of replacing its powertrain and whether Dave will bring it back for an update.

The week's other big inspection takes the opposite turn. In "This Porsche Engine Came In for a Rebuild… It Didn't Need One," carbon buildup and leaking valves sit above a bottom end that looks better than expected. It is currently attracting views fastest, while the Hamilton cam-upgrade upload and the earlier "Making the 6.7 Cummins Valvetrain Bulletproof" also carry momentum.

The channel added subscribers and nearly seven million views over the week, though its daily viewing is currently a little below usual. Nearby motoring channels have mixed rhythms: LegitStreetCars and WhistlinDiesel 1000 are running above their usual daily viewing, while Samcrac and Hoovies Garage are quieter.

Back at Dave's bench, a separate dismantled L87 supplies the deeper mechanical lesson: worn bearings, a damaged camshaft lobe and Dave's proposal to test higher oil pressure under lighter loads.

  • WHY are they putting such small oil filters on such big engines???

  • If you're a hotshot driver, you really need to think about having an engine and tranny on pallets for it. I have an 04 f350 6.0 with 06 engines that I used to deliver campers and horse trailers with and invested in an entire spare powertrain and it paid off. I've got 380k miles on my current engine and 570k on the last one before I pulled it an rebuilt it. Now it's ready to go again.
