Video taking off 11x its usual first day

100,000 BBC pages, one set of files: Mikey Smith's Trump week for The Mirror

His weekly roundup leads with the slow pace of the Panorama lawsuit, then turns to emergency powers, campaign ads and what he calls a 'full North Korea' moment.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 50,893 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (4,758).

A weekly habit took off. Mikey Smith's roundup of the strange and alarming news from Trump's America went up on October 2 and passed 34,000 views within twelve hours. A new video of this length on The Mirror usually ends its whole first day under 5,000.

The title picks the lawsuit as its lead. Donald Trump is suing the BBC over the Panorama documentary that edited together parts of his January 6, 2021 speech. According to the title, the BBC has handed over more than 100,000 pages while the President's team has sent one set of files, and the description says his lawyers are dragging their feet. From there Smith moves on to Trump declining to rule out a state of emergency, which the description ties to an election he is losing, and to an ad the tags call propaganda. He also says that Trump "appears to have gone full North Korea," after first telling viewers he doesn't mean to cause panic.

The comments came almost as fast as the views. In half a day the video had nearly as many replies as a usual Mirror video gets in its first full day, and about nine times the usual likes. Much of the talk is about the ads: viewers set Trump's denial that they were campaign ads beside his request that people pretend he is on the ballot. Others go back to the Panorama edit and argue over whether cutting a speech is the same as putting words in someone's mouth.

The rest of the paper's day was mostly news from Europe. A live stream of Green Party leader Zack Polanski's conference speech in Brighton and footage of French student protests both stayed far behind, and the channel's daily views overall were a little under their usual level. The Mirror's Sense Check interviews from Labour's conference in Liverpool, with Dale Vince and Steve Bray, are still in the hundreds.
