B.C. Conservatives propose bridge in place of Massey Tunnel
CityNews weighs the promise of a faster replacement against a construction union's warning about jobs already tied to the tunnel project.

BC Conservatives share plan for Fraser River bridge
CityNews reporter Marija Robinson puts two different versions of "ready to build" alongside each other: the BC Conservatives say a revived bridge plan could move quickly, while a construction union warns that stopping tunnel work would leave workers without jobs.
The proposal would replace the George Massey Tunnel beneath the Fraser River with a ten-lane bridge, scrapping the NDP's planned eight-lane tunnel. The existing crossing carries Highway 99 through Metro Vancouver.
Delta South MLA-elect Ian Paton argues that returning to the earlier bridge proposal would be cheaper and faster. He points to an existing environmental assessment and says construction could begin within a year, with completion in 2031. Those are the Conservatives' projections, not an agreed construction schedule.
Delta mayor-elect Melissa Granum also supports the bridge option. But Bryan Railton, business manager of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115, challenges the idea that switching projects would be straightforward: "There isn't a bridge sitting in our back pocket just waiting to go..." He warns of job losses if the tunnel project is canceled.
The report drew roughly 36,000 views in its first day, about twelve times CityNews' usual start for a Short. Viewers' discussion extends beyond bridge or tunnel: they ask about bus lanes, highway bottlenecks and whether another change of plan would delay a replacement.
