Actor Patrick Stewart passes away at age 86
"I will never say goodbye to the theatre," Patrick Stewart says in an archival clip included in CityNews' obituary tribute. For an actor so closely associated with commanding a starship, the stage remained essential.
CityNews reports that Stewart has died at 86. Sara Sidner's retrospective opens with Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the role Gene Roddenberry cast him in for Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. Stewart recalls that unlikely casting decision with a wonderfully spare verdict: "Inexplicable."
The report follows Picard through the television series, films and Star Trek: Picard, then returns to the beginnings of Stewart's acting life in Northern England. Shakespeare heard in radio dramas helped spark his passion, followed by local theater work and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films also features, but the tribute makes room for work that required no spaceship or superpowers: Broadway, the West End and Stewart's solo performances of A Christmas Carol.
The Short drew about 55,000 views within six hours, already far beyond CityNews' usual full-day audience for that format. Among viewers' remembrances, Picard's captaincy and Stewart's unmistakable voice recur. The tribute also preserves his own explanation of what kept drawing him back to live performance: "The theatre feeds me in a different way."
English actor whose stage and screen career spanned more than 60 years. He was knighted in 2010 for services to drama.
