Michael J. Fox reaches the Order of Canada's top rank and talks Canada-U.S. tensions
The Canadian Press posted three videos from his day at Rideau Hall, and the sit-down interview is the one moving fastest.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 235,756 views a day, 389 times a normal first day on this channel (606).
Michael J. Fox on his Order of Canada honour, Parkinson’s and Canada-U.S. tensions
Michael J. Fox arrived at Rideau Hall on Friday morning as an Officer of the Order of Canada and left as a Companion, the order's highest level. The ceremony clip shows spectators standing to applaud as Gov. Gen. Louise Arbour inducted him. Rideau Hall says the promotion honors his "powerful global advocacy and unflinching honesty about Parkinson's."
The Canadian Press filmed three pieces from his day in Ottawa. The longest is a sit-down conversation, and it passed 100,000 views within seven hours. On this channel a new video usually draws a few hundred views in its whole first day. The ceremony clip has been up two hours longer and sits at about the same count. A third, shorter cut keeps only his comments on trade. Together they lifted the national news agency's lifetime views past 130 million.
In the interview, Fox covers three things: Parkinson's research, relations between Canada and the United States, and what being Canadian means to him. The trade clip goes further into that second subject. He says he is saddened by the cross-border fights between his home country and his adopted one, and he is pleased Canada is standing firm. He also expects some "selective backtracking" from the U.S. in the next few years, and he does not believe the dispute will last forever.
Fox was born in Edmonton. He became a star in the 1980s with Family Ties and Back to the Future, and he first received the Order of Canada in 2010. The foundation he started in 2000 has made his name as familiar in Parkinson's research as it is in Hollywood. That second career is the one Rideau Hall chose to honor.
His interview was not the channel's only quick start of the day. A clip of Donald Trump taking credit for the release of European diesel also ran far ahead of the usual pace.
