Texas voters weigh immigration policy as they head to the polls
Griselda Vera describes a community worn down by fear of immigration enforcement. Arturo Salas supports mass deportations and a border wall. In CBS News' report from South Texas, the Trump administration's immigration policies draw sharply different responses as voters prepare to choose their next senator.
Correspondent Camilo Montoya-Galvez reports from Mission, describing a quiet border but an election in which immigration remains central. Vera tells him that fear of ICE operations affects daily life locally. "I think that the community is tired of being under attack," she says.
Salas, a McAllen resident, frames his support for enforcement around respect for the law. "Mass deportation? Yeah, I'm for it. The wall? Yeah, I'm for it," he says. He later asks: "Why have a law if it's going to be irrelevant?"
Former U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz offers a different emphasis. Reflecting on the quieter border, he calls for a balanced approach: "I think most Americans want moderation. They want something in the middle."
The report adds an immigration-focused perspective to the Texas Senate contest between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. Montoya-Galvez describes the race as neck and neck, while CBS labels it a toss-up. His closing assessment points to Latino support for Talarico as an important part of that closely contested picture.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a federal agency within the Department of Homeland Security. Its responsibilities include enforcing immigration laws and conducting criminal investigations.
