iPhone Duo cracked during setup, buyer tells CBS Mornings
Apple acknowledges an inner-display issue as Jo Ling Kent's report draws an unusually large audience and questions about durability.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 529,543 views a day, 37 times a normal first day on this channel (14,401).
Apple user says new foldable iPhone "didn't even make it through setup" before cracking
Jesse Dalton heard a loud pop. His new foldable iPhone's screen had cracked down the middle, he tells CBS Mornings, before he had finished setting it up.
"Just pulled it out of the box. It was like, it didn't even make it through setup," Dalton says in Jo Ling Kent's report on complaints about Apple's iPhone Duo, released last week.
The segment shows customers' photos and videos of inner screens cracked along the fold. Apple tells CBS News it is aware of an issue affecting the inner display and directs affected users to AppleCare for a replacement. TechRadar editor-at-large Lance Ulanoff singles out the speed of that acknowledgment.
The report reached more than 400,000 views in 15 hours, far beyond the channel's usual start for Shorts. Its comment section was also exceptionally busy, already more than a hundred times larger than a typical first day's. Viewers question how the problem escaped product testing, whether replacements make sense and what the seam might look like after prolonged use. Those are durability questions, not answers about how widespread the defect is.
Back at the anchor table, Nate Burleson supplies a different experience, holding up his own Duo. "I have the Duo. Now this is concerning, but it's working perfectly fine for me."
