United flight returns to Las Vegas after reported hijacking text
CBS Mornings airs the pilot's account of a cockpit lockdown and safe return, but the report leaves the police response unresolved.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,116,338 views a day, 78 times a normal first day on this channel (14,342).
United flight diverted after flight attendant spots passenger texting about hijacking
The cockpit was locked down, but the passenger had not been confronted. In radio audio aired by CBS Mornings, a United pilot describes turning back to Las Vegas after a flight attendant reported seeing a text about hijacking the aircraft.
"The flight attendant saw him texting that he was going to hijack the aircraft," the pilot tells air traffic controllers. He says the passenger remained compliant and was unaware of the emergency return. The report does not establish what the passenger actually intended.
Reporting from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, correspondent Kris Van Cleave explains that the Boeing 737 returned safely to Las Vegas on Saturday night. FlightRadar24 footage shows the landing, while a flight-tracking map illustrates the return.
The short report drew about 860,000 views in its first 14 hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for Shorts. Among the questions in the comments: was this a false alarm, and would there be a follow-up?
That distinction remains unanswered in this segment. Van Cleave closes by saying he is still waiting to hear from Las Vegas police.
