Dad who took down Oregon school shooter speaks out
Kaylub Giamanco becomes emotional as he recalls the calls to his wife and mother after killing a gunman inside an elementary school in Bend, Oregon. He had survived the confrontation, but he could not save everyone.
"I didn't save everybody," he says in the interview featured on CBS Saturday Morning.
Giamanco describes seeing someone dressed in black carrying a rifle, then entering the school through a shattered window. Inside, he found a teacher struggling with the gunman. He intervened and shot the attacker, who died. CBS reports that three children and a teacher were killed in the school shooting.
His account drew about 98,000 views in eleven hours on the CBS Mornings channel, an unusually fast start for its regular videos. The report centers on his recollection of the confrontation and the emotional aftermath, rather than treating the intervention as a simple story of heroism.
Correspondent Carter Evans reports that Giamanco credits the teacher who confronted the gunman as the real hero. Giamanco also intends to advocate for improvements to school safety.
