A $48 entrée and a final service at New Orleans' Gris-Gris
CBS Evening News follows chef Eric Cook's closing day as rising restaurant costs meet customers cutting back.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 571,272 views a day, 74 times a normal first day on this channel (7,730).
Thousands of American restaurants closing over rising costs, declining sales
"This is the last run," Eric Cook says as he prepares food on Gris-Gris's final operating day. By the end of the CBS report, the New Orleans restaurateur is sharing a champagne toast with patrons and turning the door sign to "CLOSED."
Mark Strassmann's report puts a kitchen and a staff behind a national story: according to CBS, more than 7,500 restaurant locations closed across the country in the first half of 2026. Cook describes reaching a point where keeping his restaurant open was no longer sustainable. He becomes emotional recalling how he told his staff.
The price of an entrée captures his disbelief. "Man, I've got a $48 entrée," he says. Across town, Fritai owner Charly Pierre describes the same squeeze from both directions: his food costs are rising while customers are saving their money. Whether to raise menu prices, he says, is a constant, difficult conversation.
The short report drew roughly half a million views in its first day, far beyond the channel's usual start for that format. Its comment section was also unusually busy. Viewers discuss swapping restaurant meals for groceries, the added expense of tips, and how even a coffee or fast-food stop can strain a budget. Those are personal accounts, but they speak directly to the spending choices the report examines.
For Cook, the decision is about the limit of what he can keep carrying: "I don't want to be a martyr for where we are right now."
