EU will not grant ‘associate member’ title to Canada: sources
Germany was among the countries that opposed giving Canada an "associate member" title in its relationship with the European Union, according to a report from Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) News, Canada's public broadcaster.
Reporter Marina von Stackelberg says the wording has been removed from a draft joint statement ahead of Friday's Canada-EU summit in Montreal. Sources who have seen the latest draft say it outlines closer ties without granting that designation.
"This idea of associate membership has been dropped from this draft statement," von Stackelberg reports. She describes the proposed status as a red line for several European countries, most notably Germany. The statement is not yet final, but she says the completed version is likely to resemble the draft.
The report follows Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit last month to Strasbourg, France, where he addressed the European Parliament. Photographs show him at the parliament and greeting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Carney's response emphasizes practical benefits rather than diplomatic terminology. In an interview clip, he says specific names matter less than the difference a closer relationship would make to Canadians' lives.
