Eating with a Somali Pirate in Somalia!!
Sonny's mission is to film food in every one of the world's 195 countries. Somalia was the newest stop, and he has stayed there for three episodes running.
The main event went up on September 25. "Eating with a Somali Pirate in Somalia!!" starts at Lido Beach in Mogadishu, where shark and swordfish come off the boats. From there it moves into the Xamar Weyne fish market, with kingfish, tuna and manta ray on the slabs, and on to a street stall frying bajiya bean fritters, tuna eggs and tuna served with spaghetti. That last plate is a reminder of Italy's long colonial history in southern Somalia. A swordfish soup cooked in a family home comes next, and only then the part the title promises: a long sit-down interview with a pirate, which takes up a good stretch of the second half. Local fixer Mohamed Abdullahi gets a credit for making it happen. In six days it has gathered more than two and a half million views, far more than anything else on the channel right now.
A short cut of the pirate encounter followed three days later and has kept a much lower profile. The first Somalia episode, a street food tour that takes in camel sambusa and bariis iskukaris, the rice-and-banana dish billed as the national plate, is twenty days old and still drawing steady viewers. So is a compilation of the Vietnam Bizarre Farms series, cobras and bamboo rats included, filmed in the country Sonny calls home.
Among food channels of similar size, Max the Meat Guy and mrnigelng are having the busy weeks. Mark Wiens, the other big travel eater nearby, is running quieter than usual.
