Shop windows are smashed in central Frankfurt as the BBC's cameras show the violent aftermath of a day of demonstrations in Germany. The report opens with looting and police lines, but makes an important distinction: thousands had joined largely peaceful protests earlier on Saturday.

Organised by the campaign group Gen Z regelt, those demonstrations addressed school underfunding, living costs, public spending cuts and military service. The BBC also reports violence in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg. Police say they used water cannon after emergency workers were targeted with fireworks, stones and bottles.

Posted today, the video has drawn roughly 33,000 views in less than three hours. Its German headline is only the starting point: the broadcast moves through separate confrontations in Albania and Poland before an extended report from France.

In Paris, correspondent James Waterhouse describes tear gas stinging his eyes and nostrils as police contain the march away from the city centre. The BBC reports hundreds of arrests across France.

The people Waterhouse speaks to give different reasons for being there. Titouan says the state is becoming more authoritarian. Another demonstrator points to inflation rising while wages fail to keep pace. Waterhouse closes with the political difficulty facing French ministers: a movement he says has snowballed, with a presidential election six months away.
