'He Sleeps 20+ Hours A Day' gets Austin Sweatt's viewers talking about a cure
The short drew an ordinary crowd for the commentary channel, but a comment section full of hopes for a treatment, personal stories and some sleepy arithmetic.
Why this story? The video drew 520 comments in its first day, 5.6 times a normal first day on this channel (94).
He Sleeps 20+ Hours A Day
"He Sleeps 20+ Hours A Day" is a short from Austin Sweatt, the commentary creator whose feed this week also covered a strange LeBron Twitter account, a Minecraft world and a YouTuber who deleted a channel with two million subscribers. This one is about a man who, as the title says, spends nearly all of every day asleep.
Its audience was in line with a usual Austin Sweatt short, a little under 280,000 views on its first day. Its comment section was not. Replies came in more than five times faster than on a typical first day for one of his shorts.
The conversation runs in two directions. The most liked replies hope that a medicine or treatment can be found, and several viewers describe something similar from their own lives: deep, long sleep brought on by medication, or a high school classmate who was hardly ever in class. Others turn to arithmetic. If an ordinary person sleeps away a third of life, what is left when sleep takes twenty hours a day? A run of video game and fantasy jokes follows, and several of the people making them stop to say they feel for him.
The deleted-channel short, posted a day later, has since drawn almost as many views, but nothing like the same conversation.
