Why are French and British English so alike? World Friends asks six countries

Christina, Mitch, Bita, Mari, Giulia and Louanne compare everyday words in the newest of five uploads, a day after American panelist Dana took on Portuguese.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Why do French and British English share so many words? World Friends put the question to a six-country panel: Christina from the US, Mitch from Britain, Bita from Germany, Mari from Spain, Giulia from Italy and Louanne from France. Half a day after it went up, the video had passed 40,000 views and was gathering them faster than anything else on the channel.

That kind of start is the channel's whole formula. World Friends, made by the Korean studio Awesome Entertainment, sits people from different countries side by side and lets the languages do the talking. The week brought five uploads in that spirit. A Portuguese "language review" with Dana from the US drew close to 68,000 views in its first day. An eight-language guessing game asked a panel from Japan, Brazil, the Netherlands, Indonesia, France, Vietnam, the Philippines and Spain to find the Asian version of familiar words. In between came a celebrity age-guessing round and a lighter look at Asian parents.

The biggest of the week's videos by total is that eight-language game, past 110,000 views. An older video is still busy too: twelve days on, an American's reaction to Asian pronunciation, with Miley from Japan, has passed a quarter of a million.

Among the reaction channels nearest its size, RICHLEV is having the standout stretch, and Lyssy Noel, CashNastyReacts and Ted Nivison are all running above their usual pace. World Friends, one of the smaller channels in that group at 2.2 million subscribers, spent its week on vocabulary.
