"We serve this city. We deserve safety." The sign held at a Melbourne vigil gives a clear message to the candles, flowers and calls for protection following a delivery rider's death.
ABC News Australia reports that hundreds gathered to remember Feng, a HungryPanda rider from Xi'an, China, who was fatally stabbed while working. Its coverage moves beyond the arrest to the concerns of fellow workers and the family remembering him back in China.
According to ABC's report, Feng and another rider confronted someone tampering with their bikes before the fatal stabbing. Community members at the vigil describe feeling unsafe and ask for stronger protection for people doing delivery work.
"We expect a safer community, we don't want anything like this to ever happen again," one interviewee tells the broadcaster.
ABC describes Feng as a hardworking father whose family remembers him as down-to-earth. Photographs, floral tributes and memorial posters place his life and work at the centre of the gathering.
Reporter Alexandra Alvaro also relays HungryPanda's statement about rider-safety discussions with the government. Victorian Deputy Premier Gabrielle Williams condemns the violence, and ABC reports that a suspect has been arrested in Footscray.
