Heavy snow falls at Thredbo, while Sydney reporter Jack Hahn stands outdoors describing a morning that feels closer to winter than summer. In 9 News Australia's report, he says the city's apparent temperature is just three degrees, colder at that moment than London and New York.
The segment, uploaded today, has drawn around 60,000 views in its first eight hours. It pairs the striking mountain footage with an explanation of how the south-east has become so cold while northern Australia remains hot.
David Crock, a senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, says a large cold front swept through New South Wales and Victoria on Saturday, drawing cold air north from the Southern Ocean. He describes small hail, thunderstorms and snowfall reaching lower elevations in Tasmania, as well as snow across the Victorian and NSW Alps.
The Thredbo clip is dated the previous day. "It's springtime in Australia in November, and it's snowing," a woman says as she films the snowfall.
Crock's forecast gives the chill a short horizon: cool conditions for Sydney through Monday, followed by a quick turnaround to above-average temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday.
