Australian customers who put down deposits for Tesla's Cybertruck have been refunded because of compliance problems, according to 7NEWS Australia's report on the vehicle's production wind-down.
Reporter Jacinta Lee cites a November 6 post from Elon Musk saying production will wind down to prioritise Cybercab output. The report contrasts that change of direction with the Cybertruck's high-profile unveiling, replaying the demonstration in which its supposedly tough window shattered under a steel ball.
7NEWS reports eight separate defect recalls and annual sales amounting to less than a tenth of the projected volume. For Australian buyers, the obstacle was getting the vehicle approved for local roads. "They were never going to make compliance here in Australia," technology expert Stephen Fenech says.
The replacement priority is another unconventional vehicle: Musk's Cybercab design has neither a steering wheel nor pedals. Fenech places the Cybertruck's difficulties within a broader question about electric pickups: "I think that category of vehicle is still not really catching on."
The report drew about 68,000 views since yesterday, the largest audience among 7NEWS Australia's new uploads.
