David Jones report brings retail memories to 7NEWS Australia's week
Former employees recall food counters, flower displays and Christmas windows beneath the channel's most-watched new upload.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
David Jones faces collapse after 188 years | 7NEWS
Former David Jones employees have plenty to add to 7NEWS Australia's report on the department store's financial troubles: memories of regular customers, a once-busy food department and the pink marble of Sydney's Elizabeth Street store.
The October 30 report has reached roughly 338,000 views, making it the most-watched of the channel's new uploads this week. Consumer Affairs Editor Jackie Quist reports difficulties paying suppliers, departing luxury brands and emergency lender funding. RMIT's Associate Professor Carol Tan raises the possibility of fewer stores, while archive advertisements supply a reminder of the retailer's long history. Quist says neither David Jones nor its parent company responded to requests for comment.
Beneath the video, personal recollections sit alongside questions about affordability. Several viewers discuss shopping at cheaper department stores instead; others remember the sales, shoe department and seasonal window displays. Those are memories of a place, not just responses to a business headline.
Elsewhere in a packed upload schedule, Donald Trump's exchange with a reporter drew a substantial audience. The Balmoral trafficking-investigation report and a feature on Jack Thompson's health and career currently have the strongest daily viewing momentum among the channel's videos.
Across the channel, the week brought about 15 million views while subscribers stayed unchanged. Daily viewing is slightly above its usual level. Nearby broadcasters have had different rhythms: BBC World Service is well above its normal daily viewing, ITV News is close to normal and CBS Evening News is quieter. For 7NEWS Australia, the department-store report remains the week's clearest meeting point between national news and viewers' own memories.
An Australian department-store chain founded in 1838 by Welsh merchant David Jones. It sells goods at the upper end of the mid-range market.

Worked there 20 years ago, it was lively and vibrant. Seems soulless at the moment.
@andreh202See it on YouTubeVery sad - I loved working in david Jones. David Jones half yearly sales were amazing. David Jones Elizabeth st store in the 80’s had old world charm and the most beautiful pink marble. Spring flower displays and christmas windows were always spectacular they had the best shoe department. It’s very sad so many businesses and manufacturers have closed down. We have become a disposable society where most things are poor quality and rubbish. Everything is on line and we pay to use all these services. Cost of living has become so very expensive. Awful society we live in now. I don’t like onlin…
@deannamastellone3559Read it all on YouTubeI worked in their food department, and at one point it was genuinely impressive. They used quality ingredients and built strong relationships with their regular customers. Unfortunately, that era is long gone.

I can't remember the last time I bought something at David Jones. Even when I need to buy something at a Department Store, I seem to gravitate more to Myer, Target, Kmart, or Big W.
@bleukreuzSee it on YouTubeI was in David Jones today. This is extremely sad. 😢
