John Legend Comes Home With a Message for Ohio Voters | The Root
John Legend starts his appeal to Ohio voters with a family history lesson, not a campaign slogan. At a rally supporting Democrats Amy Acton and Sherrod Brown, he recalls learning about his ancestor Peyton Polly on Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s Finding Your Roots.
Polly was born into slavery in Kentucky and gained his freedom before emancipation, Legend tells the crowd, bringing his family to Ohio. But slaveholders crossed into the state in 1850 and kidnapped eight family members. Legend recounts how Ohio's governor and legislature supported a legal effort to secure their freedom.
"The state of Ohio fought for their freedom," he says. He uses that history to describe an Ohio defined by refuge and neighbors standing up for one another, then turns to Springfield, where he grew up.
"My hometown is more than a headline."
The Root's Short drew roughly 29,000 views in ten hours, an unusually fast start for the channel. Its comment section was already busier than a typical full first day, with viewers discussing the family history and Ohio's role in the story.
Legend closes by translating that history into a ballot-box appeal: send Brown, who previously served as an Ohio senator, back to Washington and elect Acton governor.
