Rep. Ilhan Omar Breaks Silence After Federal Raid on her D.C. Home | The Root | The Root
Ilhan Omar had gone to bed around 3:30 in the morning. A few hours later, she says, federal agents were at her Washington home: "They were pounding on the back door and the front door."
The clip is from an MS NOW interview, which The Root posted as a Short. According to The Root's description, it is Omar's first interview since the October 12 search. The Minnesota Democrat estimates that "somewhere between 15 to 25 agents" came in, went through every room and left with 17 items. The description lists notebooks and old phones among them. The warrant was for electronics, Omar says, and that is part of what puzzles her: "It doesn't make any sense that they would raid a house to take my phone."
The description says the warrant cited potential violations involving immigration fraud, false statements in immigration proceedings and conspiracy. Omar maintains she has done nothing wrong and says the search was meant to intimidate her. When the interviewer asks about reports that authorities may be seeking evidence of immigration fraud or grounds for denaturalization, she says she and her lawyers take it very seriously. Then she adds a dry note about her age when she arrived in the United States: "I'm sure there are a lot of smart 12-year-olds, but that seems like a leap."
The Short drew about 150,000 views in its first 13 hours. Its comment section filled far faster than usual for the channel, and much of the discussion is about whether an early-morning arrival is standard practice for a search.
The Root also posted a clip that day about the federal indictment of Virginia state Sen. Louise Lucas. Its description places her case alongside Omar's, among federal actions involving prominent Black women.
