Tom Cruise's 'Digger' and an $8m weekend: Richard Osman and Marina Hyde ask who is to blame

The comment section on their box office post-mortem has turned into a defense of the film, with viewers predicting a cult classic.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 108,601 views a day, 5.5 times a normal first day on this channel (19,628).

Is Tom Cruise's 'Digger' Hollywood's Biggest Ever Flop?Is Tom Cruise's 'Digger' Hollywood's Biggest Ever Flop?

How bad is an $8 million domestic opening for a Tom Cruise film? Bad enough for The Rest Is Entertainment to ask whether "Digger", his film with Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is the biggest Hollywood flop of all time. Richard Osman and Marina Hyde set out to answer three questions: what went wrong, who is to blame, and whether anything can be saved.

The episode passed 95,000 views in its first 18 hours, far beyond the roughly 20,000 a new full episode here usually gathers in a whole day. A short cut on the same subject went up alongside it. It also lifted the whole channel, which is running at about twice its usual daily pace, a week after Marina's Celebrity Traitors reaction with former contestant Charlotte Berman drew a big crowd of its own.

The comments arrived more than three times faster than on a usual first day, and they are not the obituary the title suggests. Many viewers write that they have seen "Digger" and liked it, and several predict it will be rediscovered later, the way Eyes Wide Shut was. One compares it to Dr. Strangelove. Others reject the comparisons with Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola's costly 2024 epic. The most liked comment sides with what it hears as Richard's argument that studios still need to take big swings. Another viewer has a more practical question: whether the hosts sit so that each can see their own book.
