Love it or hate it: Warner Bros. hands DIGGER's verdict to the audience
A short clip called "You Decide" went up as Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Tom Cruise film opened in North America, and it raced far ahead of everything else the studio posted for the release.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 843,826 views a day, 111 times a normal first day on this channel (7,606).
DIGGER | You Decide | Now Playing in theaters
Studios rarely admit that a new film might not be for everyone. For the opening of DIGGER, Warner Bros. built a clip around exactly that idea, titled it "DIGGER | You Decide | Now Playing in theaters," and watched it pass roughly half a million views in its first ten hours. A Short on this channel usually gathers a few thousand on its first day.
The pitch is not hidden. A sister clip posted the same day is captioned "Love it or hate it… decide for yourself," and it has drawn only a few thousand views. The bigger crowd went to "You Decide." Going by the comments, it puts opposing reactions side by side, and much of the talk under it is about the marketing itself: viewers point out that the studio concedes not everyone will like the film, and several call that honest. Others trade digging puns or riff on the title as a catchphrase. The comments arrived more than three times faster than on a usual first day, while the likes stayed close to an ordinary Short.
The film is Iñárritu's original story of the most powerful man in the world racing to prove he is humanity's savior before a disaster he set off destroys everything. Cruise plays the title role, with Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons around him. Emmanuel Lubezki, Iñárritu's longtime cinematographer, is behind the camera again, and the whole film was shot in VistaVision, the large widescreen format of the 1950s.
Last week, as we reported here, the full trailer gave the channel a lift ahead of release. Now that the film is in theaters, the clip doing the work is the one that hands viewers the choice.

Half a million views in ten hours is far beyond what a Short usually does here, even on a channel this large.
