A KC, David Ornstein and two million views: Stick to Football's City verdict special
Episode 151 of The Overlap's podcast handed half its running time to a reporter and a sports lawyer, and the full-length show left the channel's quick clips far behind.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 2,208,140 views a day, 20 times a normal first day on this channel (111,968).
Man City Guilty: Titles Stripped, Relegation & Owners Must Go! | Stick to Football EP 151
Twenty-one hours after it went up, the special episode of Stick to Football had passed two million views, roughly twenty times what a new Overlap video usually draws on its first day. The verdict in Manchester City's financial case gave the show its subject, and the panel built the whole episode around it.
The regular sofa is all there: Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott. What sets episode 151 apart is who does the explaining. David Ornstein, the football journalist best known for his transfer scoops, walks through the charges and the appeals process. Paul Gilroy, a KC who works in sport, then takes the legal side at length. The chapters move through possible sanctions, whether the club's owners could be forced out, points deductions, relegation and what stripped titles would do to the way City's trophies are remembered. A short preview of Liverpool against City closes it out, with the Super 6 game as a coda.
As we reported here, the channel had already spent its week circling City. The difference now is the full episode itself. The snappier clips cut from the same day, Neville on the charges and Carragher on the owners, have drawn under half a million views between them.
In the comments, the guest who gets the most thanks is the lawyer, praised again and again for making a tangled case easy to follow. Others look back at Leicester's 2016 title in a new light, and a stray question about when pistachio came out has become the running joke of the thread. One of the most liked comments simply calls it the best international break ever.
