"They can't run, or they don't want to run?" Roy Keane puts that to his fellow pundits on the new Stick to Football after Gary Neville lays out Manchester United's running statistics. It is the sharpest line in an episode that has drawn about 1.2 million views since yesterday.
The printed running sheet Neville hands round reads "MANCHESTER UNITED CRISIS," and in a nod to the club's protest colors it comes in green and gold. Ian Wright sighs, "All we do is talk about Man United," and then they do, for most of an hour and a half.
The interest is in where each of them places the blame. Keane, who captained United through the Ferguson years, points squarely at the dressing room. Carrick, he says, "needs the players more than they need him," and players must show pride whatever the tactics. Neville is kinder to Bruno Fernandes, describes Carrick as looking resigned on the touchline and says the board seems unable to decide anything. "There's sometimes a manager needs sacking for their own good," he adds. Jill Scott notices players who stop talking to each other when a match turns, and Jamie Carragher sums up the Bournemouth defeat in four words: "Bournemouth's front four was better."
There is lighter material. The episode opens with Harry Kane's Ballon d'Or, which prompts Keane to wonder why anyone enjoys a red carpet. Disney+ sponsors the show, and a segment promotes its drama Rivals.
The comments came in more than ten times faster than on a usual first day for the channel. Many viewers go back over Keane's earlier verdicts on Carrick and Fernandes. Many others mention Wright, who notices his missing orange hat on a studio shelf halfway through the conversation and puts it on.
