The Dead South give "Butter My Lover" a Se7en-inspired nightmare
Donovan Workun plays an obsessive superfan in a butter-soaked music video filmed on two Canadian farms.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 118,030 views a day, 5.4 times a normal first day on this channel (21,845).
The Dead South - Butter My Lover (Official Video)
Donovan Workun hauls milk and butter into a cluttered home, where photos of The Dead South cover a red-string conspiracy board. Outside, the band plays on. Inside, its fictional admirer is taking fandom somewhere deeply unhealthy.
"Butter My Lover," released Friday, turns a song about excess into a grotesque little horror comedy. The official video had drawn roughly 81,000 views after twelve hours, putting it on course for a first day more than five times the channel's usual opening pace.
Director Travis Nesbitt cuts between the outdoor performance and Workun's increasingly messy rituals: watching the band on an old television, inspecting records, smearing butter across his face and dancing in a mask. The band's description names the gluttony scene in Se7en as its inspiration. This is a staged nightmare, not a documentary about an actual fan.
The locations give that nightmare a distinctly local foundation. The performance was filmed on a farm north of Regina, Saskatchewan, while Workun's scenes were shot at Greenwood Dairy Farms near Edmonton. A vintage-filled outbuilding became his character's home, with old cars and collected oddities surrounding it.
Viewers are inspecting the record collection almost as closely as the character does. Comments point out an obscure University of Saskatchewan commemorative album and ask whether another sleeve is a nod to System of a Down's Toxicity.
The single follows the band's announcement of "Silence, Please." Where that introduction offered a lone singer on a gravel road, "Butter My Lover" fills the frame with clutter, obsession and an alarming quantity of dairy.
