The Cat in the Hat was only the warm-up. As we reported here, a Short of Trevor Wallace questioning Michael Blaustein's costume was already drawing a crowd this morning. The full episode it came from, "Guess the Halloween Costume," has added about 820,000 views since yesterday, and it keeps going for nearly half an hour.
The first five minutes are the game the clip showed: 20 Questions from behind a divider, with Wallace testing whether his partner is an animal or a figure from a book while Blaustein offers unhelpful clues like "I'm ageless." Then the roles flip. Blaustein, in the striped hat and full face makeup, has to work out why Wallace is wearing blue scrubs and a bald cap. He gets there just before the eight-minute mark: Johnny Sins, the adult-film performer whose long list of on-screen professions became an internet meme.
When the divider drops, each finally sees the other's whole costume, and both break up laughing.
The rest is headband guessing, each comedian reading the other's card but not his own. Freddy Krueger and Pennywise come first, then Dracula and Hannibal Lecter. After that the classic monsters give way to cards reading "Jerk O'Lantern" and "Pregnant," and a final "Scary Things" category where one card says "We need to talk" and the other points at a corner of the internet best left unnamed. Storybook cat or not, this is a grown-up show.
The comments arrived about thirteen times faster than on the channel's usual first day for a full-length video. Viewers keep returning to Blaustein, who barely stops swaying and dancing through the opening round, and to a bald cap convincing enough that some forgot Wallace has hair. The description credits that transformation, and the cat's, to makeup artists Tess Miller and Bobbie Eller.
