Smart Nonsense goes beneath ice rinks and Antarctic ice

Five new explainers span frozen surfaces, particle collisions and a flying iron cap that has reached roughly 740,000 views.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

The FASTEST object we’ve sent to space..The FASTEST object we’ve sent to space..

Smart Nonsense has been looking under familiar surfaces: beneath an ice rink, down a nuclear-test shaft and into Antarctic ice. Henry Belcaster's five-upload week gives the channel's question-everything approach a distinctly chilly corner to explore.

"The Crazy Science BENEATH Ice Rinks.." arrived alongside "This freezes EVERYTHING it touches..", while Friday's "This Telescope Is BURIED Under Antarctic Ice.." extended the frozen theme. That last upload is already among the channel's most active videos, together with the older "The ant death spiral EXPLAINED..".

The week's biggest new audience, though, gathered around "The FASTEST object we've sent to space..", now at roughly 740,000 views. Its animation follows underground nuclear testing from a vaporized concrete plug to an iron cap propelled up a shaft. The presenter describes the cap as reaching space; viewers are debating whether it could have survived the atmosphere at all. That distinction matters: an extraordinary launch speed does not by itself establish a successful trip into space.

Across the channel, daily viewing is modestly above its usual level, while the subscriber count finished the week unchanged. Among nearby science channels, Hank Green and NileBlue collected larger weekly audiences; Smart Nonsense had a bigger week for views than Steve Mould or PBS Space Time.

For all the attention on the flying cap, the Antarctic telescope supplies a fresh version of this channel's favorite question: why put a familiar piece of technology somewhere so unexpected?
