Two days after it went up, Gary Neville's post-match podcast from the Old Trafford gantry is still one of the most watched new videos around, adding about 805,000 views since yesterday. The comment section is the giveaway: on its first day it filled more than 17 times faster than a usual Sky Sports Premier League video.
Neville starts by giving Bournemouth their due, praising the free-kick goal and the finishing. Then he turns on his old club. "Manchester United right now are a very easy team to play against," he says, pointing to predictable attacking patterns, weak pressing and too little work rate.
What stays with him is the scene at full time: the crowd chanting for Carrick and turning on the players. Neville goes after Bruno Fernandes for publicly questioning his manager, saying the captain had "stuck the knife" in, and adds, "I'm sorry, read the room, Bruno." He backs the point with a story from his own playing days, when Sir Alex Ferguson disciplined him for swearing at him during an away match.
The board gets no softer treatment. Neville argues United should have begged an elite, proven manager to come rather than trying less experienced coaches again, and calls leaving the defense unstrengthened "absolute negligence." He includes himself in the criticism of executives: at Salford City, which he co-owns, he says he made mistakes of his own when sacking managers.
His sympathy for Carrick also comes from experience. "I managed for 4 months," he says, recalling the press conferences and lost control of his spell at Valencia. Even so, he expects United to act: "I fear they're going to make a change in the next 24 hours." That is his prediction, recorded on the night, not an announcement.
The channel kept the debate going the next day, with Jamie Carragher saying Carrick should be "relieved of his duties" and Tim Sherwood and Jay Bothroyd reacting to fans. Neville's half hour has drawn far more views than any of them.
