Sky Sports News put the Football Association's statement on the Manchester City verdict in front of its viewers on Friday. It became the channel's most watched new video, passing 650,000 views in its first 18 hours.

The statement is brief and carefully worded. The FA calls the Independent Commission's decision one with "significant implications for the integrity of the game," says it is weighing those implications and will "take action where appropriate," and then steps back. Because the proceedings between the Premier League and City are still going, it will say nothing more for now. The case belongs to the Premier League, so a word from the FA, the body that runs the whole English game, carries its own weight.

The same day brought City's answer. The club said it had lodged an appeal, calling the commission's opinion "unsafe." Sky Sports News' report on that appeal finished only a little behind the FA clip, and the two lifted the whole channel to about five times its usual daily views. The verdict also reached the England camp, where Thomas Tuchel, preparing for Croatia in the Nations League, called it a big topic among his players.

After Jurgen Klopp and Downing Street, as we reported here, this was the governing body's turn, and the comments arrived several times faster than on a usual first day. Many viewers argue the punishment should grow the longer the case drags on. Others expect years of legal back-and-forth, and one practical suggestion keeps coming up: any fine should go to youth and community football.
