Etihad's legal threat to the Premier League runs twenty-eight times Sky Sports News' usual start
The airline was not named in the redacted findings against Manchester City, yet its statement drew more views in eight hours than Jurgen Klopp's reaction or Ronaldo's exit from the Portugal camp.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,280,522 views a day, 28 times a normal first day on this channel (46,287).
Manchester City principal sponsor Etihad Airways considering legal action against Premier League
Manchester City's principal sponsor has stepped into the case, and Sky Sports News' report on it is the busiest thing on the channel. In eight hours the short video on Etihad Airways weighing legal action against the Premier League passed 600,000 views. An upload here usually gathers fewer than 50,000 in its whole first day.
The story rests on a statement. Etihad was not named in the redacted findings the league published, but the airline says the way those findings were communicated, after what it calls a period of selective leaks, has left it with "damaging implications." It says the league never contacted it during the process, so it had no chance to be represented or to check the information used. It rejects any suggestion that it was part of improper commercial arrangements. It also says it stands with the club as City challenges the conclusions, and that it is seeking legal advice. Sky Sports News adds that the Premier League has been contacted for comment.
The report follows a day of fallout from an independent commission's decision that City were guilty of all charges over serious breaches of the league's financial rules. The club is expected to appeal. As we reported here, a barrister's explainer by Michael Ashcroft KC was one of the channel's most watched videos that day. Klopp's reaction and the news of Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Portugal's camp also drew big numbers. Within hours, the Etihad clip had more views than any of them, and the channel's daily views have more than doubled.
In the comments, viewers keep asking why a sponsor would aim at the league rather than at the club, and many mention that the airline and the club both have ties to Abu Dhabi.

A single report about a sponsor's statement is carrying the channel's day, well ahead of anything else it posted on the City case.
