Byron Donalds wanted a place in the Congressional Black Caucus. Roland Martin wanted to know what he would bring to it, given his opposition to legislation on voting rights and police accountability.
That exchange, originally broadcast in June 2021, is drawing an unusually large audience on Roland S. Martin's channel. The newly posted flashback passed 120,000 views in twelve hours, already well beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for regular videos. Donalds, a freshman congressman when the interview aired, is the Republican nominee for Florida governor in 2026.
Donalds explains that joining the caucus would allow policy discussions and relationship building across party lines. Martin responds by working through his record, beginning with voting-rights legislation and his objections to certifying electoral votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania after the 2020 election.
"I actually voted not to certify in Pennsylvania and Arizona," Donalds says. He argues that election procedures departed from state law; Martin presses him on why he rejected results that state officials had certified.
The discussion then turns to Donalds's opposition to the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which he attributes to concerns about qualified immunity. Asked later which policies would directly benefit Black communities, Donalds points to school choice, health care competition and criminal justice reform. Martin agrees on school choice while criticizing both parties' education records.
The upload is explicitly labeled as archival, including its discussion of whether Donalds would support Trump in 2024. Its description also discloses a paid partnership.
At the close, Martin thanks Donalds for appearing, saying few Republican colleagues accept invitations to Black-owned media platforms.
