Ridge Lenny's Norway foil challenge runs on leg power
His cold-water mile attempt has passed a million views, while viewers keep returning to one practical concern: a life jacket.
Why this story? The video is running at 198,225 views a day, 7.2 times its usual pace (27,578).
Can I pump my hydrofoil foil for 1 mile straight? (Freezing water) 🥶 #foiling
He falls short. Ridge Lenny gets within a hundred yards of completing his flat-water mile before his hydrofoil touches down and he drops into the cold Norwegian water.
For the Maui ocean athlete, the unfamiliar part isn't balancing above the surface. It's supplying all the power himself. Without waves carrying him along, every stretch of the bay demands more pumping from his legs.
The September Short is getting a fresh burst of attention a month after publication, adding roughly 200,000 views in a day, more than seven times its usual daily pace. It has also crossed a million views.
Ridge launches from a rocky pier on a pink board, with a map graphic laying out the route ahead. An inserted clip shows another foiler sustaining the motion on a Swiss lake; footage of Ridge downwinding on Maui makes the contrast clear. Here, there's no wave doing the work.
"What I didn't fully realize is how good of a workout it is," he says. By halfway, his legs are burning. Near the finish, a headwind adds another obstacle to an already tiring crossing.
The comments focus as much on the possible swim as the ride. Repeated requests for a life jacket sit alongside suggestions about pumping rhythm and efficiency. Ridge's final splash supplies his own much shorter assessment: "That's all I got. Oh, that's cold!"

Def think the rate of pushing matters, you have less efficiency bc they are just gliding while your using energy to go up a down a lot.

What provides the propulsion in Ridge's flat-water challenge?
Ridge repeatedly pumps the foil with his legs to keep moving without wave assistance.
