Alexa Lavoie faces demands to stop filming in Saint-Denis
Rebel News' train-station report draws an unusually large early audience as a dispute over filming escalates around its crew.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 140,452 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (12,434).
Things got ugly in Paris...
"Madam, stop filming," a man tells Alexa Lavoie. She answers that they are in a public space. That disagreement runs through Rebel News' report from outside the train station in Saint-Denis, France, where the crew's camera becomes the focus of a confrontation.
The Short, titled "Things got ugly in Paris...", drew about 70,000 views in eight hours, already several times the channel's usual full-day audience for Shorts. Its comment section also grew well beyond a typical first day before that day was over.
Lavoie and cameraman Guillaume Roy are reporting amid unrest in France, according to the video's description. Lavoie shows street vendors near the station and says people began shouting insults as soon as filming started. An object is thrown toward the crew, and she describes the situation as unsafe.
The exchanges include competing accounts of what is happening. One man says they are only selling cigarettes and denies there is aggression. Others acknowledge that filming is allowed but object to being recorded, referring to unauthorized sales. Lavoie repeatedly maintains that she can film in public.
Rebel News also drew an unusually fast audience for its separate London coverage, with publisher Ezra Levant reporting ahead of Tommy Robinson's trial. The Saint-Denis upload stays with the argument at street level: whether the crew will keep recording when the people in front of its camera demand that it stop.
