A Fordham law professor explains Christa Pike's failed execution on PBS NewsHour
Amna Nawaz's interview with Deborah Denno passed 134,000 views in six hours, and a live stream of lava from Kīlauea gave the channel a second big start the same day.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 338,413 views a day, 20 times a normal first day on this channel (17,220).
What we know about Tennessee's botched execution of Christa Pike
PBS NewsHour covered the Christa Pike case by turning to a legal scholar. Amna Nawaz spoke with Deborah Denno, a professor at Fordham School of Law who has spent much of her career studying how executions are carried out. Their segment, "What we know about Tennessee's botched execution of Christa Pike," passed 134,000 views in its first six hours. That puts it on course for about twenty times a usual first day for the channel.
The segment's description sets out the facts plainly. Tennessee officials failed to carry out Pike's lethal injection on Wednesday. Her attorneys say she is alive and in critical condition after she was given two separate doses of pentobarbital meant to kill her. She was sentenced to death for the murder of a classmate in 1995.
The story also led that evening's broadcast. In the full October 1 episode it comes first, ahead of the investigation into the flydubai flight, a look at the Pentagon and a midterm conversation with Karl Rove and David Axelrod. The episode's own summary says the case is renewing questions about the death penalty.
The channel's other big start that day was a very different kind of video. "WATCH LIVE: Lava flows from Hawaii's Kīlauea volcano" is a stream of footage that the description credits to the USGS, with no narration promised. It also ran more than sixteen times past a usual first day. As we reported here, quick starts have been a pattern on PBS NewsHour, from the UN General Assembly streams to Jack Smith's Senate appearance. This time a courtroom-style explainer and a river of lava carried the day.
