Beyond El-Sayed: OnePath examines Muslim candidates' election gains
Dahlia Canbaz's report connects Michigan's Senate result to broader representation and changing arguments over US support for Israel.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 216,901 views a day, 20 times a normal first day on this channel (10,966).
Muslims Are BREAKING Into American Politics
"MICHIGAN IS NOT FOR SALE" reads the campaign slogan in OnePath Network's report. It captures the argument running through the Short: Abdul El-Sayed's Senate victory matters not only for who won, but for the opposition he faced.
Narrated by Dahlia Canbaz, "Muslims Are BREAKING Into American Politics" has drawn nearly 200,000 views in 20 hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for Shorts.
The report introduces El-Sayed as the first Muslim elected to the US Senate, then cuts through campaign spending, rally attacks on his name and adverts portraying him as a threat. It contrasts those attacks with his statements on Gaza and his distinction between a lobbying organisation, a country and a religious community.
"AIPAC and Israel are not the same as Judaism and the Jewish people," El-Sayed says in the clip. OnePath reports that a majority of Jewish voters backed him.
Canbaz then widens the picture, reporting that at least 36 Muslim candidates won or were leading their races. The piece argues that unconditional support for Israel is becoming a less secure political position, making that interpretation central to its account of the election.
A companion Short, "ISRAEL LOST The American Election", also drew an unusually large audience for OnePath, though the El-Sayed report attracted considerably more views.
