Orkney takes Not Economically Viable beyond the garage
The channel's only new upload sets a journey home with no money, transport, accommodation or food.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
700 Miles Home With No Money
The cars get a breather. Not Economically Viable's only upload this week, "Stranded on an Island 700 Miles From Home", swaps mechanical problems for the challenge of getting home from Orkney without the usual travel essentials.
It drew about 80,000 views in its first 22 hours. But the more revealing detail is in the creator's description: making something outside his usual subject matter has brought back his enjoyment of making videos. For a channel whose entire introduction is "Not a restoration channel.", this is a fairly convincing way to broaden the definition.
The comments turn that change of direction into a conversation. Viewers discuss watching for the personality rather than just the cars, compare the outing with GeoWizard's adventures, and point to the kindness of people encountered along the way. Others have a practical question: how did he end up on the island in the first place?
The new adventure is the channel's biggest daily draw by a considerable margin. Behind it, "Buying a £500 car wherever the dart lands" offers an earlier experiment with letting a journey dictate the video: throw a dart at a UK map, travel there and find a cheap car. The nonrunning L405 project in "I found out why these Range Rovers are so cheap" also continues drawing views.
Subscribers were unchanged over the week, while the library added roughly 92,000 views. That weekly viewing total was close to those of nearby motoring channels TJ Hunt Clips and MAD Detailing 2. Here, though, the week's distinctive addition wasn't another vehicle project, but a trip the creator says he had an absolute blast making.
