Misirlou, the surf riff that opens Pulp Fiction, gets a Mr. Tabs lesson

Patrick Dwyer breaks Dick Dale's 1962 instrumental into seven sections, and a quieter Metallica upload went up two days earlier.

Patrick Dwyer finally got to Misirlou. His Dick Dale lesson went up on Wednesday and drew close to 60,000 views in its first day. That is the kind of start that makes it the channel's busiest video by a wide margin, ahead of Santana's Europa and Led Zeppelin's The Ocean from the weeks before.

The song needs little introduction. Dale's 1962 recording turned an old Eastern Mediterranean tune into the blueprint for surf guitar: rapid-fire tremolo picking on the low strings, drenched in reverb. Quentin Tarantino made it famous all over again by putting it over the opening credits of Pulp Fiction in 1994. A small dance-scene still in the thumbnail is what tipped off several viewers before they read the title. Dwyer splits the tune into seven sections, from A to G.

The comments read like a guitar club. One viewer jokes that it is black metal without the distortion. Another plans to use it as alternate-picking practice before tackling Megadeth. Older players remember seeing Dale play it live at a state fair in the 1980s.

The week's other upload, Metallica's For Whom the Bell Tolls, went up with a bare one-word description and has started slowly. Overall the channel ran a little above its usual daily pace. Among the music-lesson channels nearest its size it drew the most views of the week, while the drummer Colby Fulton and EMIL VERGO were both well ahead of their own norms.
