Jill Bearup brings fan-fiction, and a thumbnail debate, to Lindybeige Studios

Lloyd's one new upload is an interview about a field he calls new to him, recorded while his guest was visiting to film a Regency dance video.

Lindybeige put out a single video this week, and it wandered well away from spears and shield walls. "FANFICTION: what is it, and who can save us from it?" is an interview with Jill Bearup, the YouTuber best known for her videos on stage combat and fight scenes in film. The description explains how it happened: she had come to Lindybeige Studios to record a video about learning to dance like an accomplished Regency lady, and it seemed madness not to interview her about something while she was there.

The comment section turned into a seminar. Viewers offered their own family trees for the form, from Sherlock Holmes pastiches to Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and one pointed out that a Star Trek pitch grew into Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books. The most liked comments, though, are about the thumbnail. Lloyd admits in a pinned note that he used a bit of AI to make it, as a nod to the AI-made covers he kept seeing on fan-fiction books, and plenty of viewers have opinions on how that turned out.

The interview is not the busiest video on the channel, however. That is "How to depict the stone age in films properly," another conversation, this one with Maarten Peels, who makes films set in the late palaeolithic. Eight days old, it is drawing several times the daily views of the fan-fiction talk, which fits a channel whose dream project is a television series called "Built for the Stone Age."

The channel as a whole had a softer week, at about two-thirds of its usual daily pace, with around 300,000 views. Among the history and explainer channels near its size, Geography By Geoff and FORGOTTEN HISTORY are the ones running hot, while Mr. Beat is a little below his usual level too.

  • Hearing Jill say she's never written Star Trek fanfiction because she hasn't watched a lot of it made me laugh because in my experience with writing fanfiction, consuming the original IP is quite optional.

  • It occurs to me that Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is fanfiction of Shakespeare.
