Camp David at the golf club, and Jimmy Kimmel answers Guillermo's dancing critics

Trump, Hegseth and Fox News's 30th birthday fill the monologue, but the comment section belongs almost entirely to Kimmel's sidekick and his Dancing with the Stars run.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 2,884,893 views a day, 17 times a normal first day on this channel (172,467).

A day after it went up, Jimmy Kimmel's Thursday monologue had passed 2.9 million views, and its comment section had little to say about the president.

The politics take up most of the running time. Kimmel starts with Donald Trump's wish to turn part of his golf club in West Palm Beach into a presidential retreat along the lines of Camp David. He then turns to Trump being asked to clarify his remark about Iran striking Los Angeles and San Diego, the line that led Wednesday's monologue, as we reported here. Pete Hegseth's trip to San Diego to greet the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln is in the mix, and so is Fox News turning 30.

The last stretch is the one viewers keep writing about. Kimmel addresses the people who have been criticizing Guillermo Rodriguez's dancing on Dancing with the Stars, and he closes with a montage of Guillermo out among people. Comments came in about twelve times faster than on the channel's usual first day. The most liked ones are about how openly Kimmel enjoys his sidekick's success and how readily Guillermo laughs at himself. Many viewers say they are voting for him every week. One of them is a 76-year-old choir singer who had never watched the show and now looks up Guillermo's routine after each Tuesday rehearsal.

The ballroom has been running through the whole week. On Tuesday, Kerry Washington told Kimmel she was rooting for both Guillermo and Julia Stiles. Wednesday's monologue, which included a visit with Guillermo and his partner Witney Carson on the show's set, has since passed 3.8 million views. Thursday's interviews with Jessica Chastain and Malcolm Gladwell are still around 200,000 each, so for now the talk of the channel is a man with a dance card.

The numbers

Monologues usually run well ahead of the interviews posted beside them, and this one still far outpaced an ordinary first day for the show's regular videos.
