Sugar becomes sculpture in Great Big Story's Berlin artist visit

Joseph Marr's glass-like creations share the upload shelf with a food trip through Missouri.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Joseph Marr works with an ingredient more familiar to a donut shop than a sculpture studio. The Berlin-based artist uses 3D scans, molds and cooked sugar to make glossy forms that, as Great Big Story's title announces, some visitors end up licking.

"The Sugar Sculptures Visitors Can't Stop Licking" was the more-watched of the channel's two new uploads, reaching about 16,000 views. There is an interesting tension beneath that tempting surface: Marr's work explores impermanence and transformation, yet the description says his oldest pieces have lasted fourteen years. Viewers are discussing the hygiene of shared licking, while one asks for more opportunity to hear the artist himself.

Sugar also figured in the week's other release, "Everything We Ate in Missouri on Route 66," although here it belonged firmly on the menu. The stops range from pineapple cream cheese pastries and frozen custard to Springfield-style cashew chicken and Lambert's thrown rolls.

That journey has a longer companion. Posted two weeks ago, "The Ultimate Missouri Food Guide (Route 66 Edition)" remains the channel's busiest video by daily views. Food critic Jason "J" Lee takes the trip from St. Louis to Ozark, meeting Wing and Ling Leong along the way to explore the story behind Springfield's cashew chicken.

The subscriber count held steady, while daily viewing is running roughly half again above its usual level. Nearby food channels Nick's Kitchen and BeardMeatsFood had much larger viewing weeks; Great Big Story's own momentum remains concentrated in that Missouri road trip.
