Canceled Riyadh flights leave Bangladeshi workers waiting in Dhaka
Global News follows the attack on King Khalid International Airport to a departure hall in Bangladesh, where passengers heading to Saudi jobs had nowhere to go.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 174,859 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (13,548).
Riyadh airport attack kills at least 12, strands Saudi-bound passengers
At Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, flights to Riyadh and Dammam were canceled, and the people booked on them were left with tickets and no departure. Four Bangladeshi passengers speak in the Global News report: Mohammad Saiful Alam, Mohammad Jubair, Mohammad Rubel and Mohammad Khalil Miah, several of them traveling to Saudi Arabia for work.
Rubel puts the cost plainly. The wait is hard, he says, because he has a family to support and living expenses to cover.
The disruption follows the attack on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, which Saudi authorities say killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300. The report opens on smoke above the airport and debris inside the terminal. A Saudi-led coalition blamed Yemen's Houthis, who had not claimed responsibility but had warned against using Saudi airspace and threatened further strikes.
The Short closes in Maryland, where Donald Trump, stepping off his plane, answers reporters' questions about the attack and possible U.S. involvement. "I think it's terrible," he says, adding, "Look, the Saudis are good fighters."
The report passed 100,000 views in about ten hours, far more than a Global News Short usually gathers in a full first day, and its comment section filled faster than usual too. Much of that discussion turned to the wider conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
It arrived on a crowded weekend for the channel, alongside its coverage of Hurricane Simon striking Mexico's Pacific coast and the Gaza ceasefire.
