Canvas water bags bring road-trip memories to Driveway Finds

Seven uploads paired old-car curiosities with a three-day attempt to revive a car left sitting for 30 years.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

The little bag drew memories. Driveway Finds' most watched new upload asked why old cars carried these canvas water bags, and viewers answered with recollections of desert crossings, family trips and water kept cool outside the car.

The October 7 upload has reached roughly 615,000 views. One commenter remembers their dad hanging bags on the grille during a cross-country journey in 1966; others recall seeing them on vehicles in Australia and West Texas. The practical detail behind the nostalgia is evaporative cooling: moisture evaporating from the canvas takes heat with it. It is an old solution with plenty of people around to remember using it.

Across seven uploads, the channel also found humor in a panel vehicle's blind spots and returned to its rescue roots with a car that had sat for decades. That newest upload's title sets a compact deadline: three days to get it running. It is already among the channel's most active videos, though the water-bag post is drawing the most daily views, with the panel-driving clip also continuing to attract attention.

Driveway Finds added subscribers over the week and collected about 4.4 million views, the largest weekly view gain among its nearby motoring peers. My Mobile Mechanic 978 also had a substantial viewing week, while Mat Armstrong Full Builds added more subscribers. Today's viewing pace is considerably below Driveway Finds' usual daily level, a quieter finish to a week whose standout subject was a piece of road-trip kit rather than a big build.

  • I remember my dad hanging a couple of these on the grille on a cross country trip we did in 1966 that took us through the Mohave Desert, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert and Petrified Forest.

  • People used these canvas water cooler bags in Australia in the 50s to the 70s hang them off the bumper bar of a truck or a car was a vital bit of kit when travelling through remote regions of Australia

  • There's an old hack like that for cooling down a water bottle.

Step 1: put the water bottle in a sock
Step 2: soak the sock with water
Step 3: hang it somewhere in the shade

  • Yeah, we have...or had bags like this but much much bigger in the army. They were called lister bags. On a hot Georgia day, they would still have nice cool water thanks to evaporative cooling.

  • They sure worked in West Texas where the humidity was very low and it was usually breezy or windy. Hang it the shade and it absolutely worked.
  • I remember this i dont remember my dad doing it but you would see cars coming the other way and seeing the bag hanging
