El-Sayed offers Trump a "lie detector" deal
C-SPAN's Kalamazoo rally clip pairs the Michigan Senate candidate's response to Trump with an argument that faith should not determine political participation.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 450,581 views a day, 36 times a normal first day on this channel (12,589).
El-Sayed: "I'll go through a metal detector if you'll sit for a lie detector"
Abdul El-Sayed starts with the Constitution, not the comeback. Addressing a rally in Kalamazoo, Michigan's Democratic Senate candidate says attacks on his Muslim identity distract from grocery and gas prices.
"And I'm an American who believes in the Constitution and that that shouldn't matter," he says in C-SPAN's clip from the Thursday speech.
The line in the video's title comes later. Responding to what he describes as President Donald Trump's suggestion that he should pass through a metal detector, El-Sayed offers a condition: "I'll go through a metal detector if you'll sit for a lie detector." He goes on to propose asking Trump whether he won the 2020 election.
The clip drew nearly 300,000 views in its first 11 hours, already far beyond C-SPAN's usual full-day audience for a Short. Its comment section was also more than ten times as busy as the channel's typical first day for that format.
C-SPAN posted another short version of the same exchange that also drew an unusually large audience. Alongside the rally footage, its separate "Former RNC & DNC Chairs on Abdul El-Sayed" upload features Donna Brazile discussing his need to win Black voters and Ronna McDaniel criticizing his values, putting campaign analysis beside the candidate's own words.
