Trump defends White House repairs after Obama's "Cheesecake Factory" joke
C-SPAN's rally clip captures the president arguing that the building must be pristine, while describing renovation work as something that relaxes him.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 684,308 views a day, 45 times a normal first day on this channel (15,057).
Trump responds to Obama's "Cheesecake Factory" remarks
Donald Trump turns a joke about White House décor into a defense of his building credentials in C-SPAN's clip from a campaign rally in Corinth, Mississippi.
Barack Obama had compared the renovations to Saddam Hussein opening a Cheesecake Factory. Trump returns to the restaurant reference from the podium, then argues that the work is necessary: "I took over the White House and it was in horrible condition."
He describes cracked columns and stones left on the ground, praises his own ability to build beautifully and inexpensively, and presents the projects as upkeep for a national symbol. "The White House represents our country, and that has to be pristine," he says. C-SPAN's description also notes his explanation that working on the renovations relaxes him.
The Short drew about 465,000 views in its first 12 hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for that format. A separate regular-length upload, "President Trump Reacts to Obama's Criticism," also drew an unusually large audience compared with C-SPAN's other regular videos.
The headline exchange takes a while to arrive. Trump opens with remarks about Obama's crowds and past election campaigns; the Cheesecake Factory reference comes more than a minute in. From there, he makes the building itself his answer to Obama's punchline.
