Barack Obama has a question about the administration's response to his Oval Office joke: why involve the Treasury secretary?
Campaigning for the Democratic ticket in Georgia, the former president revisits his comparison of Donald Trump's redecorated office to a Cheesecake Factory. He then turns to what he describes as an unusually elaborate response, including a Treasury secretary's press conference outside the restaurant chain.
"They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke," Obama says.
The C-SPAN clip drew roughly 400,000 views in its first day, about sixty times the channel's usual start for a regular video. It follows Trump's defense of his White House renovation work, as we reported here, but this appearance takes the exchange beyond the decorating choices themselves.
Obama first offers some credentials for making the restaurant comparison: years of taking his daughters to Chuck E. Cheese, California Pizza Kitchen and the Cheesecake Factory. "That was my jam for about a decade," he says.
Then comes his political argument. Obama says the administration has focused on the restaurant reference rather than answering criticism about prices and tariffs. Recalling his own handling of the financial crisis, he remarks that he never sent his Treasury secretary, Tim Geithner, to an Arby's.
By the close, Obama connects the episode to his campaign message: he argues that outrage over a joke offers no solution to voters' high bills.
