Buy, build or shrink: Channel 4 Homes explores London living

Kirstie and Phil's east London search joins Seb's back-garden self-build and George Clarke's micro-flat makeover.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

London living takes three forms. Channel 4 Homes posted three episodes, moving from first-time buyers negotiating for flats to a self-builder making a home in his grandparents' back garden.

The biggest new audience went to “First-Time Buyers Fight Brutal £500K London Bidding War | Location, Location, Location,” with roughly 52,000 views. Phil Spencer helps Abbi find an accessible home, while Kirstie Allsopp searches with Rhian and Cathal. Beneath the episode, viewers discuss opaque balconies, service charges and how much privacy a converted house really offers. Others ask when it originally aired: this east London installment was first shown in September.

Kevin McCloud's Grand Designs episode follows Seb designing, managing and building his house himself, including devising its cladding. George Clarke's newest outing offers a different scale: a tiny London studio, a lighthouse ship and Nina's lorry conversion.

The channel added subscribers over the week, although daily viewing is running at about a third of its usual pace. Its weekly views gain was the largest among nearby TV and streaming channels, with Columbo also drawing substantial viewing and Outside TV quieter.

An older Amazing Spaces Short remains its busiest video: “17 years old. £3,500 spent. Zero mortgage. #GeorgeClarkesAmazingSpaces” has passed 2.5 million views.

  • omg, as an architect who's worked on these high rise flats before, having a M(4.3) compliant flat with an opaque balcony never crossed my mind as being an issue, but ohh my, it is. I'd hate not being able to see out.
