Car Throttle's MR2 roadster wins over a former Mk1 racer

Alex Gassman's racing memories meet the Mk3's sharp handling in an archive comparison of Toyota UK's heritage cars.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Things we can learn from the video

Press to jump

  1. 0:46The Mk1 combines a high-revving 1.6-liter engine, low weight and steering without power assistance.
  2. 8:50The larger Mk2 trades some lightness for a more refined grand-touring feel.
  3. 17:09The Mk3 is the lightest of the three; the hosts praise its turn-in but flag catalytic converter issues.
  4. 20:09A storage inspection finds dashboard compartments, roof storage bins and three cup holders for two occupants.
  5. 22:30Lucas chooses the Mk3 for its balance of price, weight and driving fun; Alex agrees shortly afterward.

Alex Gassman has a personal reason to favor the first Toyota MR2: he started racing one as a teenager. Yet by the end of Car Throttle's three-generation test, it is the little open-top Mk3 he wants to take home.

With no new uploads this week, "We Drove ALL THREE Toyota MR2s - Which One Is The Best?" remains the channel's most active video right now. The year-old comparison has passed 100,000 views, giving Alex and Lucas's tour through Toyota UK's heritage collection a continuing audience.

The appeal is in the differences. The boxy Mk1 brings a rev-happy engine and unassisted steering; the larger Mk2 feels more like a comfortable grand tourer. Then the Mk3 sheds weight and lowers its roof. Lucas calls it the sharpest to drive, while Alex finds its handling unexpectedly persuasive despite his affection for the original. There is room for practical discoveries, too: three cup holders for a car with only two seats.

Car Throttle added roughly 159,000 views across the week, with its subscriber count unchanged. Daily viewing is currently less than half its usual level. Tavarish is also having a subdued spell, while DRIVETRIBE and Vice Grip Garage each drew several million views over the week.

Elsewhere in Car Throttle's archive, the Mercedes-AMG A45S and BMW M2 comparison is drawing attention, followed by another Toyota family gathering: the AE86, GT86 and GR86.
