Microsoft's buyout offer ties exit pay to rank and service

Business Insider's Ana Altchek puts a practical question to Microsoft's sweeping buyout offer: what would employees actually receive if they agreed to leave? The company is offering voluntary exits to roughly 60,000 workers, according to her report, but there is no single package for everyone.

Drawing on a memo obtained by reporter Ashley Stewart from Microsoft's Chief People Officer Amy Coleman, Altchek explains that compensation depends on an employee's location, job level and length of service. The offers differ across the US, Canada, India and the UK.

The pay formula makes that distinction concrete. An on-screen breakdown lists one week of base pay for every six months of service for employees at level 64 and below. For levels 65 through 67, it lists twice that amount. Continued stock vesting and health insurance are also included among the benefits described.

The Short drew about 186,000 views in its first day, far beyond Business Insider's usual start for the format. Comments focused on the compensation formula, comparisons with standard severance and questions about workloads for employees who remain. Those are viewers' concerns, not outcomes established by the report.

For eligible employees, the immediate decision has a deadline: Altchek says they have until early December to accept the offer. She also reports that Microsoft's workforce reductions remain ongoing, both voluntary and involuntary.
