Atlas gets a grip on drill prep at Boston Dynamics
The company's latest demonstration puts its new robot hands to work, with a teleoperation label visible throughout.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Robot Hands for Real Work #bostondynamics #robotics #atlas
Picking up a drill bit is only the beginning. Atlas has to lift the drill with its other hand, guide the bit into the chuck and tighten it with its fingers before lowering the tool toward a wooden block.
That small workshop sequence supplies Boston Dynamics' only new upload this week, "Robot Hands for Real Work #bostondynamics #robotics #atlas". The company's product demonstration has reached roughly 65,000 views. Crucially, the screen says "Teleoperated" throughout: this is a demonstration under remote human control, not an autonomous robot deciding how to tackle the job.
The comments bring some familiar workshop rituals to the futuristic setting. Viewers suggest giving the drill a preliminary rev, debate how a person would tighten the chuck and find a new interpretation of "hand made." The contrast is rather good: sophisticated robotic fingers, confronted with a task that invites opinions from anyone who has put up a shelf.
Atlas also carries the channel's strongest momentum beyond the new clip. "Machine, Assemble, Repair: How We Build Atlas | Boston Dynamics" goes behind the manufacturing process, while "New Hands for Atlas | Boston Dynamics" explains the hardware now getting this practical outing. Those two older uploads are drawing views at almost identical daily rates, well below the fresh demonstration.
Across the channel, daily viewing is close to its usual pace, and the subscriber count was unchanged over the week. Google for Developers is having a busier spell, with daily views more than double its typical level. Boston Dynamics' week is more measured, with the attention centered on Atlas exchanging broad spectacle for careful finger work.

You need to make it go “vroom vroom!” first before drilling. Makes it drill better. It’s science.
